My name is Phillip Clark and I am the proud big brother to an amazing sister, Sarah Jenelle Clark. Sarah is one of the most kind-hearted individuals that I know. She would do anything for anybody. Sarah has that kind of smile that is absolutely contagious. Even on a tough day, when Sarah is around, you can’t help but to smile. She’s always had that natural ability to make people feel comfortable, even complete strangers. She is 28 years old, and currently uses her abilities to teach reading and other skills to second grade students. Along with her warm, caring personality and her ability to connect with young children in a way that allows them to reach their full potential, Sarah has many other abilities. She has found that she has a passion for painting—and she is quite talented. She has a goal of someday selling her artwork online and at various art fairs.
Sarah just happens to have Down syndrome.
I was 4 years old when she was born so most of my memories as a child include Sarah. I can vividly recall the day that she was born and I was so excited to become a big brother. 28 years have passed, and I’m still feel just as lucky to be her big brother.
Sarah has impacted my life in so many ways. Over the years, I have connected with many individuals who also have a sibling with special needs. Through many conversations with these individuals, I know that I’m not the only sibling that can enthusiastically say that my sister has made me a more sensitive, caring, empathetic, and driven person.
Not only has Sarah impacted my personality, she has also influenced my career.
My desire when I graduated from college 10 years ago was to help families, much like my own, plan for the amazing and abundant future for their loved one with special needs. Because of Sarah, I believe that EVERYONE has the ability to be impactful to others—and it is this ability that creates a strong sense of purpose in life. I believe that Special Needs Planning should be the vehicle that allows for this life of impact.
However, I quickly realized that the industry standard of special needs planning was very different than the planning that my family did that has allowed Sarah to find her purpose. I knew that families were overwhelmed, frustrated, and confused by their unique planning needs and that the solutions that did exist, were only focused on the ‘what if’s’ in life.
I knew there needed to be a change in how families approached special needs planning.
Because of this needed change, I created my organization, ENABLE Special Needs Planning enablespecialneedsplanning.com. Every member of our team has been blessed to have a family member with special needs. At ENABLE, we serve families across the country—guiding them through five key areas of comprehensive planning that is tailored to their family. Our unique planning process is focused on creating a purposeful and abundant future for the entire family. However, a great deal of attention and planning is focused on creating a custom and unique plan for the individual with special needs to live this life of purpose and impact. All of this…inspired by my sister, Sarah.
I feel so blessed and lucky to have such an inspiring younger sister!
